The DERMagic System A Complete Guide to Natural Skin Care for Dogs

When Nothing Else Has Worked

If you're reading this page, chances are you've been on a frustrating journey. Your dog has been scratching, losing fur, developing dark patches of skin, or dealing with recurring hot spots—and nothing seems to help for long.

You've probably tried the medicated shampoos from the pet shop. Perhaps your vet prescribed steroids, antibiotics, or antifungal medications. Maybe you've experimented with dietary changes, supplements, and every "miracle cure" you've come across online. Some things helped temporarily. Most didn't help at all. And here you are, still searching for answers while your dog continues to suffer.

We understand. DERMagic exists because of a story just like yours.

How DERMagic Began

In the early 2000s, Dr. Adelia Ritchie watched helplessly as her beloved dog Shenanigan developed black skin disease—a condition veterinarians told her was untreatable. His once-beautiful coat fell out in patches. His skin turned dark, thick, and elephant-like. Conventional medicine offered no solutions, only the suggestion that it was "cosmetic" and he'd have to live with it.

But Dr. Ritchie wasn't just any pet parent. She was a PhD organic chemist with decades of experience formulating skincare products. If conventional approaches couldn't help Shenanigan, perhaps she could develop something that would.

Drawing on her knowledge of organic chemistry, botanical ingredients, and the remarkable properties of natural sulfur, Dr. Ritchie began formulating products in her own kitchen. What started as a desperate attempt to help one dog became the DERMagic System—a comprehensive approach to canine skin care that has since helped thousands of dogs across the world.

Shenanigan made a complete recovery. His fur grew back. His skin returned to normal. And DERMagic was born.

Since 2006, we've been helping dogs throughout Europe and beyond find relief from skin conditions that conventional approaches simply couldn't address. Every product we make carries forward that original mission: to provide safe, effective, natural alternatives for dogs who deserve better.

Understanding Your Dog's Skin Problems

Before we explain how the DERMagic System works, it helps to understand what's actually happening with your dog's skin.

The Role of Yeast and Bacteria

Every dog's skin hosts a community of microorganisms—bacteria, yeast, and fungi that normally live in balance without causing problems. But when something disrupts that balance, these organisms can multiply rapidly and cause significant issues.

Yeast overgrowth, in particular, is behind many common skin complaints. That distinctive "corn chip" or musty smell? Yeast. The dark, thickened skin in the armpits, groin, or around the neck? Often yeast. The relentless itching that keeps your dog (and you) awake at night? Frequently yeast-related.

What disrupts this balance? The triggers vary: allergies, hormonal imbalances, a weakened immune system, excessive moisture, dietary issues, or even the very medications meant to help. Steroids, while providing temporary relief from itching, actually suppress the immune system and can allow yeast to flourish unchecked. It becomes a frustrating cycle—temporary relief followed by worsening symptoms.

The Problem with Conventional Approaches

Conventional approaches to skin problems in dogs typically focus on suppressing symptoms rather than addressing underlying imbalances. Steroids reduce inflammation and itching but do nothing about the yeast, bacteria, or fungal overgrowth causing the problem. Antibiotics may knock back bacterial infections temporarily, but they also disrupt the skin's natural microbial balance, often making things worse in the long run.

Many medicated shampoos contain harsh chemicals that strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry, irritated, and even more vulnerable to problems. And because these approaches don't address the root causes, symptoms typically return as soon as the medication stops—often worse than before.

This is why so many pet parents find themselves trapped in an endless cycle of vet visits, prescriptions, and disappointment.

A Different Philosophy

The DERMagic System takes a fundamentally different approach. Rather than suppressing symptoms or attacking the skin with harsh chemicals, we work with your dog's skin to restore balance naturally.

Our formulas are built around ingredients that have been used for centuries to support skin health: natural sulfur, organic aloe vera, neem oil, tea tree oil, and other botanicals with well-documented properties. These ingredients don't just mask symptoms—they help create an environment where healthy skin can thrive.

Natural sulfur, in particular, is the cornerstone of our approach. This remarkable mineral has natural antifungal, antibacterial, and keratolytic properties, meaning it helps address microbial overgrowth while encouraging the shedding of dead, damaged skin cells to make way for healthy new growth.

The Four Steps Explained

The DERMagic System is a comprehensive four-step routine designed to cleanse, soothe, target problem areas, and restore skin health. Each step builds on the one before, creating a complete approach to skin recovery.

Step One: Cleanse
Peppermint and Tea Tree Oil Shampoo or Skin Rescue Shampoo Bar

Every effective skin care routine begins with proper cleansing. But not all shampoos are created equal—especially when it comes to dogs with sensitive or problematic skin.

Many commercial dog shampoos contain sulfates, artificial fragrances, and harsh detergents that strip away natural oils and irritate already-compromised skin. They might leave your dog smelling nice temporarily, but they can actually make skin problems worse over time.

Our cleansing products are different. Formulated specifically for dogs with skin sensitivities, they're sulfate-free and pH-balanced for canine skin (which is more neutral than human skin and requires gentler formulas).

The Liquid Option: Peppermint and Tea Tree Oil Shampoo

Our original liquid shampoo combines the clarifying properties of peppermint and tea tree essential oils with gentle, plant-based cleansers. It removes dirt, debris, and excess oils without stripping the skin, while the essential oils provide natural deodorising benefits and leave the coat fresh and clean.

The formula includes organic aloe vera to soothe irritated skin during the bathing process, plus vitamin E to nourish and protect. It rinses clean without leaving residue that could irritate sensitive skin.

The Eco-Friendly Option: Skin Rescue Shampoo Bar

For pet parents who prefer a more sustainable approach, our Skin Rescue Shampoo Bar delivers powerful results in a concentrated, water-free format.

This isn't just a regular shampoo in bar form—it's specifically formulated with natural sulfur and organic neem oil, making it particularly effective for dogs dealing with yeast overgrowth, hot spots, or persistent skin irritation. The bar format means no plastic bottles, no water weight in shipping, and a surprisingly long lifespan (one bar typically lasts as long as two or three bottles of liquid shampoo).

Lather the bar directly onto wet fur or between your hands, massage thoroughly into the coat and skin, and rinse. The rich, creamy lather reaches deep into the coat to cleanse thoroughly while the sulfur and neem work their magic on the skin beneath.

How to Bathe Your Dog for Best Results

Whichever cleansing option you choose, technique matters. Wet your dog thoroughly with lukewarm water, ensuring the water reaches the skin (not just the top of the coat). Apply shampoo and massage deeply, working it all the way down to the skin—this is where the problems are, so surface washing won't do. Allow the shampoo to sit for 3-5 minutes before rinsing (this gives the active ingredients time to work). Rinse thoroughly until the water runs completely clear. Follow with conditioner.

For dogs with active skin issues, we recommend bathing once or twice per week during the initial recovery period, then reducing to every 1-2 weeks for maintenance once skin health improves.

Conditioning: The Essential Follow-Up

After shampooing, always follow with our Peppermint and Tea Tree Oil Conditioner or one of our Conditioner Bars (available in Lemongrass or Rosemary Mint).

Conditioning isn't optional—it's essential. The conditioner restores moisture, helps detangle the coat, and leaves a protective layer that keeps skin hydrated between baths. Our conditioners contain organic shea butter and nourishing plant oils that soften the coat and support skin recovery.

Apply conditioner after rinsing out shampoo, massage through the coat, leave for 1-2 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Step Two: Soothe and Support
Skin Rescue Lotion

This is where the real transformation begins. The Skin Rescue Lotion is the heart of the DERMagic System—a concentrated formula designed to address the underlying causes of skin problems rather than just masking symptoms.

What Makes Skin Rescue Lotion Different

Most topical products for dogs focus on providing temporary relief from itching. They might contain steroids, antihistamines, or numbing agents that make your dog more comfortable for a few hours but do nothing to address the actual problem.

Skin Rescue Lotion takes a different approach. Its key active ingredient is natural sulfur, which has been used for centuries to address skin conditions in both humans and animals. Sulfur is naturally antifungal, antibacterial, and helps break down the thickened, dead skin that accumulates when skin health is compromised.

The formula also includes certified organic whole-leaf aloe vera for deep soothing and hydration, organic neem oil to help address microbial imbalances, organic shea butter for lasting moisture without clogging pores, vitamin E as a powerful antioxidant for skin cell health, and carefully selected essential oils for their skin-supporting properties.

Together, these ingredients work synergistically to create an environment where healthy skin can regenerate naturally.

How to Use Skin Rescue Lotion

For dogs with generalised skin issues, alopecia X (black skin disease), significant hair loss, chronic itching, or widespread irritation:

During the first week (intensive phase), apply Skin Rescue Lotion to affected areas twice daily. Massage thoroughly, ensuring the lotion reaches the skin (not just sitting on top of the fur). Cover with a soft t-shirt or recovery suit to prevent licking and keep the lotion in contact with the skin. Continue twice-daily application for the full first week.

From week two onwards (maintenance phase), reduce to once-daily application. Continue until skin shows significant improvement and new fur growth is established. For severe or long-standing conditions, expect to continue for 8-12 weeks or longer.

What to Expect During Recovery

It's important to understand what happens during the recovery process, as some changes can seem alarming if you're not prepared for them.

During the first few weeks, you may notice increased flaking or shedding of dead skin. This is actually a positive sign. The sulfur is helping to break down and shed the damaged, thickened skin that has built up over time. Think of it as your dog's skin clearing out the old to make way for the new.

You may also notice temporary darkening before lightening. Dark skin (hyperpigmentation) often gets slightly darker before it begins to fade. This is normal and indicates the formula is working.

Many dogs go through what we call the "ugly phase"—a period where things look worse before they look better. Dead skin sheds, old fur falls out, and new growth hasn't yet appeared. This is temporary—usually lasting 2-4 weeks—and is followed by visible improvement.

New fur growth often appears patchy at first. Hair doesn't all grow back at once. You'll typically see fine, soft new growth appearing in patches, which gradually fills in over time.

The key is to stay consistent. Dogs with conditions like black skin disease or alopecia X have often been struggling for months or even years. Recovery doesn't happen overnight, but with patience and consistent application, remarkable transformations are possible.

Step Three: Target Problem Areas
Hot Spot Salve

While Skin Rescue Lotion addresses widespread skin issues, Hot Spot Salve is formulated for targeted application on specific problem areas.

When to Use Hot Spot Salve

Hot Spot Salve is ideal for hot spots (acute moist dermatitis)—those red, oozing, painful areas that seem to appear overnight. It's also perfect for stubborn patches that aren't responding as quickly to the Skin Rescue Lotion, minor wounds, cuts, and scrapes, insect bites and stings, localised areas of irritation between toes or around ears, and areas prone to recurrent problems as a preventive measure.

What's in Hot Spot Salve

Hot Spot Salve contains a concentrated blend of natural sulfur (the same active ingredient as our lotion, in a more concentrated form), organic aloe vera for soothing relief, organic neem oil to address microbial imbalances, beeswax to create a protective barrier that allows skin to breathe while keeping active ingredients in place, vitamin E to support skin recovery, and essential oils including tea tree and lavender for their natural skin-supporting properties.

The salve has a thicker consistency than the lotion, allowing it to stay in place on specific areas without spreading or rubbing off immediately.

How to Use Hot Spot Salve

If the area is dirty or has discharge, gently clean it first with a damp cloth or during bath time. Apply a thin layer of Hot Spot Salve directly to the affected area. Massage gently to ensure good contact with the skin. Apply once or twice daily until the area improves. For hot spots, you should see improvement within a few days; for stubborn areas, continue for 1-2 weeks.

Transitioning from Lotion to Salve

Many pet parents start with Skin Rescue Lotion for overall skin support, then transition to Hot Spot Salve for maintenance once the majority of issues have improved. The salve is perfect for quickly addressing any new spots that pop up, keeping your dog's skin healthy long-term without needing to apply lotion to the entire body.

Keep a jar of Hot Spot Salve on hand at all times—it's invaluable for addressing small issues before they become big problems.

Step Four: Restore and Protect
Cell Restoration Creme

The final step in the DERMagic System focuses on restoration and protection. Once damaged skin has shed and new, healthy skin is emerging, the Cell Restoration Creme provides deep nourishment to support this delicate new tissue.

Why the Final Step Matters

New skin is fragile. It lacks the protective barriers that fully mature skin has developed, making it vulnerable to dryness, environmental damage, and potential setbacks. The Cell Restoration Creme provides deep, lasting moisture that penetrates to nourish skin at a cellular level, protection that creates a breathable barrier against environmental stressors, support for continued recovery by providing nutrients for healthy skin cell development, and prevention to help maintain skin health and stop recurrence of problems.

What's in Cell Restoration Creme

This rich, luxurious creme contains organic shea butter (fair-trade certified, deeply moisturising and protective), organic aloe vera for soothing and hydration, vitamin E for antioxidant protection, rosemary extract as a natural antioxidant that supports skin health, sesame oil for nourishment that absorbs easily, and essential oils for continued skin support.

The texture is rich but not greasy, absorbing well into the skin without leaving heavy residue on the coat.

How to Use Cell Restoration Creme

Apply to areas where new skin and fur are emerging. Massage gently until absorbed. Use as needed—some dogs benefit from daily application, others need it only occasionally. Focus on areas that tend toward dryness or have been particularly affected.

Beyond Recovery: Year-Round Uses

Cell Restoration Creme isn't just for dogs recovering from skin conditions. It's invaluable for cracked paw pads (especially in winter when salt and cold take their toll, or in summer when hot pavement causes damage), dry or chapped noses (common in certain breeds and during extreme weather), elbow calluses (the thickened, sometimes cracked skin that develops on dogs who rest on hard surfaces), seasonal dryness (when central heating or dry climates leave skin and coat lacklustre), and senior dogs (whose skin naturally becomes drier and thinner with age).

Many pet parents keep Cell Restoration Creme as a year-round staple, even after their dog's skin issues have fully resolved.

Enhance Your Routine: The Dead Sea Salt Scrub

While not part of the core four-step system, our Dead Sea Anti-Dandruff Salt Scrub is a powerful complement that many pet parents find invaluable.

What Makes Dead Sea Salt Special

The Dead Sea, located at the lowest point on Earth, contains water with a mineral concentration ten times higher than ordinary ocean water. These minerals—including magnesium, calcium, potassium, and bromide—have been prized for their skin benefits for thousands of years.

Our salt scrub harnesses these minerals for your dog's skin health.

Benefits of the Salt Scrub

The scrub provides deep exfoliation to remove dead skin cells, dandruff, and buildup that can trap bacteria and yeast. It offers detoxification by drawing impurities from the skin. The massaging action improves circulation and stimulates blood flow to the skin. By removing dead skin, the scrub enhances absorption and allows subsequent products to penetrate more effectively. And it delivers mineral nourishment directly to the skin.

How to Use the Salt Scrub

Use the salt scrub before bathing, on dry or slightly damp fur. Take a generous handful of the scrub and massage into the coat and skin, working in circular motions. Pay particular attention to areas with dandruff, flaking, or thickened skin. Continue for several minutes—this is also wonderfully relaxing for your dog. Follow with shampoo and conditioner as usual.

For dogs with significant dandruff or skin buildup, use the salt scrub once weekly. For maintenance, once or twice monthly is typically sufficient.

The salt scrub is also excellent for itchy paws—massage it between the toes to address yeast that often accumulates in these warm, moist areas.

Choosing Your System: Liquid vs. Bar

We offer two complete system options, each containing everything you need for the full four-step routine. The choice between them comes down to personal preference and priorities.

The Liquid System

Our Liquid System includes Peppermint and Tea Tree Oil Shampoo (8 oz), Peppermint and Tea Tree Oil Conditioner (8 oz), Skin Rescue Lotion (8 oz), Hot Spot Salve (2 oz), and Cell Restoration Creme (4 oz).

This system is best for pet parents who prefer traditional liquid products, dogs who are accustomed to regular liquid shampoos, those who find liquid products easier to apply, and situations where quick, easy application is the priority.

The Bar System

Our Bar System includes Skin Rescue Shampoo Bar, Conditioner Bar (Lemongrass or Rosemary Mint), Skin Rescue Lotion (8 oz), Hot Spot Salve (2 oz), and Cell Restoration Creme (4 oz).

This system is best for environmentally conscious pet parents (less plastic, no water weight), those who want the extra sulfur and neem benefits of the shampoo bar, pet parents who appreciate longer-lasting products (bars outlast bottles), and dogs with particularly challenging skin conditions (the bar formula is more concentrated).

Both systems use the same Skin Rescue Lotion, Hot Spot Salve, and Cell Restoration Creme—only the cleansing products differ.

What to Expect: A Realistic Timeline

Every dog is different, and recovery timelines vary based on the severity and duration of the condition, your dog's overall health, and how consistently the system is applied. However, here's a general guide to what many pet parents experience:

During weeks 1-2, you'll see initial changes including reduction in odour (often noticeable within days), some reduction in itching, possible increase in flaking as dead skin begins to shed, and the "ugly phase" may begin as old skin comes away.

During weeks 3-4, early progress becomes visible with continued reduction in itching and scratching, flaking beginning to subside, dark skin possibly beginning to lighten slightly, and first signs of new fur growth appearing as fine, soft hairs.

During weeks 5-8, visible improvement becomes clear with obvious improvement in skin condition, dark patches continuing to lighten, new fur growth becoming more visible, and reduced need for twice-daily lotion application.

During months 2-4, significant recovery occurs with substantial fur regrowth, skin colour returning toward normal, itching largely resolved, and transition to maintenance routine.

During months 4-6, continued progress brings the coat filling in more completely, skin health stabilising, and many dogs achieving full or near-full coat recovery. Some may continue to see gradual improvement for up to a year.

Important notes: Dogs with alopecia X or black skin disease often take longer to show improvement—patience is essential. Conditions that have been present for years may take 6-12 months for full recovery. Some dogs experience faster results; others take longer—this is normal. The "ugly phase" is temporary and is actually a sign of progress. Stopping the routine too early is the most common cause of disappointing results.

Tips for Success

After helping thousands of dogs find relief, we've identified the factors that make the biggest difference in outcomes:

Consistency is Everything

The single most important factor in success is consistent, daily application. Skipping days, reducing frequency too soon, or stopping when things start to look better are the most common reasons for disappointing results.

Set a daily reminder. Make it part of your routine. The few minutes it takes each day add up to remarkable results over time.

Don't Stop Too Soon

When you start seeing improvement—less itching, new fur growth, healthier-looking skin—it's tempting to reduce or stop the routine. Resist this temptation.

Continue the full routine until improvement is well-established, typically at least 8-12 weeks. Then transition gradually to a maintenance routine rather than stopping abruptly.

Cover Treated Areas

Dogs naturally want to lick off anything applied to their skin. While DERMagic products are non-toxic, licking reduces their effectiveness by removing the product before it can work.

Use a soft t-shirt, recovery suit, or light bandaging to keep treated areas covered, especially for the first hour after application. This dramatically improves results.

Address the Whole Picture

Skin problems rarely exist in isolation. Consider diet—a high-quality, species-appropriate diet supports skin health from the inside, and reducing carbohydrates can help since they feed yeast overgrowth. Consider allergies—if environmental or food allergies are contributing factors, addressing these will improve outcomes. Consider immune support—a healthy immune system is better able to maintain skin balance. Consider stress—chronic stress can affect skin health, so ensure your dog has a calm, enriching environment.

Document Progress

Take photos every week—same angle, same lighting. When you see your dog every day, it's easy to miss gradual changes. Looking back at photos from week one compared to week eight can be incredibly motivating.
